Sports: Nigeria survive a late scare to win 2-3 against co-hosts Australia!

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup continued Thursday (on FS1 and the FOX Sports app) with a matchup between Group B’s Australia and Nigeria at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.

 

Nigeria came out of the halftime break and scored two key goals to take the lead from Australia. After Osinachi Ohale put Nigeria in the lead with a punctuating header into the net, Asisat Oshoala subbed into the game and quickly scored to give the Super Falcons a two-goal advantage over the Matildas.

In the final moments of the match, Alanna Kennedy converted a corner kick to cut Australia’s deficit to 3-2. Ultimately, Nigeria was able to hang onto the lead with only a few minutes left in the match.

Kennedy finished off a successful corner kick and gave Australia some hope in the final few minutes of play.

73′: Big-bench energy

Asisat Oshoala came into the game and made her presence known, putting Nigeria up 3-1.

64′: For the lead

Osinachi Ohale put Nigeria ahead with a punctuating header into the net.

50′: Just in time

Kanu finally got her goal — scoring in first half stoppage time to tie the game at 1-1

45′: Goal

Australia got on the board with a goal from Van Egmond right before the half.

17′: A slip and fall

What looked like a breakaway for Kanu turned into a slip up, as she found herself unable to stay on her feet.

13′: A nice attempt

Steph Catley attempted to get Australia its first point of the night, but sent the ball sailing into the near post instead.
